An estimated 20% of captive parrots are affected by high cholesterol levels, one of many fatty disorders affecting these animals. Few options exist to diagnose and treat this health issue in birds. Researchers will explore the use of a new tool to evaluate hundreds of blood fat molecules (lipidomes) in Quaker parrots, a species commonly affected by fatty disorders. The team also will look for blood parameter changes associated with specific diets. In conjunction with these studies, the team will evaluate if statins, a common class of lipid-lowering drugs, are effective at addressing fatty disorders in Quaker parrots. Findings will be used to improve the diagnosis and treatment of these understudied, but common diseases in parrots.
