Spearheading specialized health research for cats
Cats hold a unique place in our hearts. Morris Animal Foundation has advanced targeted research on behalf of our feline companions since 1950. Following are some of the ways we’ve improved cat health.
- Improving Shelter Cat Health: Feline upper respiratory infection (URI) is more than just a kitty cold. It’s one of the most common reasons for euthanasia of shelter cats in the United States. Researchers from the University of California–Davis found a link between URI and housing and developed a new cage design that is changing how shelters house and manage their cats to achieve lower rates of the infection. - Testing Drugs to Fight Oral Cancer: Oral cancer is a devastating disease of cats that becomes more common as a cat ages. Feline oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC), the most common oral tumor diagnosed in cats, is particularly serious because it is generally recognized too late for it to respond to treatment. Several Morris Animal Foundation-funded researchers have made headway into addressing the therapeutic needs cats with OSCC have. Read more.
- Understanding Prevalence of FIV: Feline immunodeficiency virus and feline coronavirus are two serious infectious diseases that significantly affect the health of cats worldwide. With Morris Animal Foundation funding, researchers from the National Cancer Institute recently established the global prevalence of these infections. Read more.
