D07MS-614: Molecular Evaluation of Canine and Feline Parvoviruses in Southern California

Cats and dogs sometimes become very ill because of infections with parvoviruses. In 2007, these viruses seemed to cause more frequent and severe disease than usual in animals in several shelters in Southern California. Using genetic tools, the student will analyze the DNA found in blood and feces samples of affected dogs and cats. By comparing the DNA sequences to known parvovirus genes, she hopes to identify whether there are new variations of canine parvovirus (the dog virus) and feline panleukopenia virus (the cat virus) that have caused increased illness in dogs and heart problems in cats. This information will help to better prevent and treat these infections.
