In 2008, Morris Animal Foundation will fund nearly 200 new and continuing studies for dogs, cats, horses, llamas/alpacas, and wildlife as well as more than 40 veterinary student projects.

We also have numerous studies nearing completion. You can search our current study database by species and/or disease to learn more about the studies we are funding in the areas you care most about. The results will also show you whether a study is available for sponsorship.

Colic is the leading cause of death in horses. Although surgery can save horses with severe colic, remaining damaged intestine and complications caused by the restoration of blood flow can limit survival. Flunixin is an analgesic and anti-inflammatory drug used routinely to manage pain and shock in horses postoperatively, but studies show that it inhibits intestinal healing. The pain-relieving affects of this drug are critical, so it is crucial to investigate alternative antiinflammatory agents to increase survival. This study looks at the use of lidocaine, a local anesthetic, combined with flunixin to improve intestinal healing following colic surgery and increase survival of horses with colic. This Fellowship Training Grant benefits horses while supporting a doctoral student's training in the colic and digestive disease laboratory.
